Please find below information I have been sent that may be useful to you:
As we move firmly into winter, the Council has put out a press release (available here: https://gloo.to/6kvm) reminding people to be prepared for possible flooding, alongside helpful advice in how to prepare or act if a flood event does occur.
Thank you
- Rainfall has been higher than average for the last 5 months, and we are experiencing back-to-back storm events – the catchment is very wet and therefore susceptible to flooding.
- Leeds FAS1 is operational and protects the city centre up to a 1-in-100-year event – which is a very good standard of protection.
- Leeds FAS2 is still under construction, there are some isolated areas of increased protection, but its full potential doesn’t come into force until it is complete.
- There are a range of other schemes across Leeds which enhance protection.
- There are schemes in development on Wortley Beck, Sheepscar Beck, Thorner Beck and in Wharfedale and Potternewton Park – more info and mailing list sign up options: Have Your Say Today - Leeds City Council Flood Resilience - Commonplace
- Advice for residents to prepare for flooding:
- Create a flood plan. You can find templates on the government website for a:
- Personal flood plan
- Community or group flood plan
- Business flood plan
- Sign up for flood alerts in your area for free on gov.uk
- Read guidance on the different types of flood warnings, and what they mean for your home or your travel plans
- Do not try to travel through flood water, on foot, in a vehicle or otherwise. Read more advice for driving in storms, rain and strong wind.
- Advice for residents to report flooding, blocked drains and gullies, and more to the Council and other relevant organisations.
- Full guidance on the emergency process can be found on page 68 of the councillors yearbook, but here is a summary:
- Members can call 0113 3760499 to report an emergency situation 24/7.
- Members will be copied into SITREPS of emergency situations in their wards by RET – information on these SITREPS must be shared in compliance with GDPR rules.
- Updates on emergency situations will be shared via Leeds Emergency on X.
- RET issue warnings on the Severe Weather Group Bulletin (Leeds City Council - Severe Weather Mailing List (govdelivery.com) to sign up) – these have input from partners such as FRM so are Leeds Specific.
- The RET will work alongside partners and the LRF for wider response and represent LCC at meetings, if they are established (wide-spread incident affecting several agencies and geographic locations).
